How much does boat winterization cost?

Doing it yourself costs roughly $100–$250 in supplies for a typical single-engine boat — bare-minimum baskets run less (Discover Boating says $50–$100), while real catalog prices for the full shopping list land in the low hundreds (West Marine, accessed Oct 2026). Paying a yard or dealer runs roughly $150–$600+ depending on engine type: published lists show outboard lay-up at $321.90 (Lighthouse Harbor, PA), a full sterndrive package at $508.93 (Lighthouse Harbor), and sail-diesel engine winterizing at $235 (Riverside, NY). Haul-out, shrink-wrap and storage are separate lines on top of all of these numbers. One honest caveat before any of it: everything below is a published price, a level from a named yard's rate sheet — not a quote for your boat.

01The quote, dissected

A winterization quote looks opaque until you break it into its moving parts. There are really only four: the engine line, the systems lines, the boat-sized lines (haul, wash, wrap), and the storage line. This guide prices the first two and shows how the third is billed — storage rent lives in its own guide, because it deserves one.

The single biggest lesson from the published rate sheets: the same words on two quotes can mean different amounts of work. Snug Harbor Marina (Pentwater, MI) lists inboard winterization at $125/engine for its 2026–27 season — that's the raw drain-plus-antifreeze line only. Bluff Creek Marina (TX) charges $407.39 per sterndrive engine for 2025, including drain, antifreeze fill, fuel stabilizer, and taxes. Riverside (NJ) runs diesel engines on a winterizing machine with -100°F antifreeze and fuel stabilizer included, at $235. All called "winterization." Ask any yard what its number includes, and the price suddenly makes sense.

02What yards actually charge, by engine type

Every figure here comes from a published rate sheet from a named business, with the season noted. Two yards in the same town can legitimately differ by half — that's scope and market, not error.

Outboards

Outboard winterization — published rates
Yard / source, seasonPriceIncludes
Timber Marine, WI — Silver, 2026–27$175–$185 by HPFuel treatment, greasing, lower-unit check
Timber Marine — Gold$270–$340Adds oil & filter, lower-unit oil
Timber Marine — Platinum$600–$675Adds water pump, thermostats, diagnostics
Sportsman's, MO — 2-stroke$179–$279 by HPOil/filter/gear lube change in
Sportsman's — 4-stroke$374–$479 by HPFluids changes in
Somers Point, NJ — 2-stroke, 2024–25$215 / $390 twins + mat.Filters, gear oil, fog, flush
Somers Point — 4-stroke$300 / $540 twins + mat.2-stroke scope plus oil change
Lighthouse Harbor, PA — Oct 2026 list$321.90 flatEngine winterization

Note the pattern in the middle of that table: Sportsman's charges 4-strokes roughly double the 2-stroke price because the oil change is in the base; Somers Point splits the work differently. Whether oil is included is the single biggest swing factor between a ~$175 and a ~$475 outboard quote.

Sterndrive / inboard-outboard (I/O)

Sterndrive winterization — published rates
Yard / source, seasonPriceScope
Lighthouse Harbor, PA — Oct 2026 list$508.93 flatEngine winterization
Bluff Creek, TX — 2025$407.39/engineTaxes and shop fees in; stabilizer, run to temp, drain, antifreeze fill
Timber Marine, WI — 2026–27$200 / $390 / T&MSilver / Gold / Platinum tiers
Sportsman's, MO — current list$299–$999By cylinders and package tier

Somers Point (NJ) takes a different cut: "fog & flush" at $170 per motor, fluids change at another $170 — and the sheet warns that fog-and-flush alone is not recommended for motors run over 10 hours since their last fluids change. That's a yard telling you, in print, why the cheap version of the service exists and when it's wrong.

Inboard and sail

Riverside (NJ) lists diesel sail auxiliary winterization at $235 and diesel generator at $265 — run on a winterizing machine with -100°F antifreeze and fuel stabilizer included. The same sheet notes powerboats aren't offered that season, with a subcontractor referral instead — a useful reminder that yards scope their work narrowly and say so. Snug Harbor (MI) prices inboard engine/generator winterization at $125/engine and everything-else-boat-systems at $125/hr plus materials. Sportsman's prices inboards case by case.

PWC and the national frame

Lighthouse Harbor lists PWC winterization at $231.15; Bluff Creek at $289.79 for 2025. Discover Boating's industry-wide frame: $150 for small boats up to $600 for larger vessels, professionally done.

03DIY: what the Saturday actually costs

If you own an outboard and a garage, the manufacturers say the job is yours to do. Mercury: with basic tools and the proper supplies, the DIY-inclined "can usually tackle the task," and the procedure is in every owner's manual. West Marine calls winterizing "simple tasks that are easily performed by most owners" of an outboard-powered boat. Yamaha's phrasing: straightforward, "if you're handy and have the right tools and time."

Here's the real shopping list, at West Marine catalog prices, accessed October 2026 (sale prices exist but aren't the base):

The DIY basket — West Marine catalog, Oct 2026
ItemCatalog price
-50°F engine & water system antifreeze, 1 gal$9.99 (or $13.99 for -60°F, $19.99 for -100°F)
STA-BIL 360° Marine fuel stabilizer, 32 oz$31.99
Fogging oil(a few dollars per can)
80W-90 lower-unit gear lube, 1 qt$15.99
10W-30 4-stroke marine engine oil, 1 gal$45.99
Camco I/O winterizing kit (bundles the fittings)$69.99
Oil filter wrench$21.99
Marine grease, 14 oz$16.99

Antifreeze goes by the gallon ($9.99–$19.99 depending on the protection level you pick), and a little of it is the whole point — most boats need only a few gallons for the engine and potable-water lines. A bare-bones outboard basket — antifreeze, stabilizer, fogging oil, gear lube — lands near $100. Add the oil change, filter wrench and grease and you're in the low-to-mid $200s, matching Boatsetter's ~$250 full-boat figure. Discover Boating's $50–$100 assumes the minimum kit and notes most components are reusable year to year.

Now the honest audit of what DIY cannot buy back:

  • The machine. Riverside runs engines on a winterizing machine that circulates antifreeze through every passage — hard to replicate with a funnel and a flusher muffle.
  • The knowledge of your specific engine. A dealer tech knows where every drain plug hides on your block. Miss one, and you've skipped the whole point.
  • The second pair of eyes. A Mercury-interviewed shop notes pros catch things owners miss: throttle and shift cable adjustment, loose transom bolts, bent propshafts.

The counterfactual, if it goes wrong: BoatUS's analysis of ten years of GEICO|BoatUS freeze claims found more than three-quarters involved cracks in the engine block or exhaust manifolds from water left aboard during a hard freeze — and says the checklist items would have prevented more than 95% of those claims. Repair "all too often involves a complete engine replacement," and Boatsetter puts even the smallest engine replacement over $10,000. That's the four-figure risk you're weighing against a $300–$500 service, and it's why the sensible split for most owners is: DIY the outboard, pay for the sterndrive or inboard with its plumbed systems.

04How yards price it: flat, per-foot, hourly

Engine winterization is almost always flat-rated per engine. Lighthouse Harbor states it plainly: "All our Winterization prices are set at a flat rate," separate from storage and varying by engine type and storage kind. Bluff Creek is flat per engine; Sportsman's is flat by horsepower or cylinder tier.

Per-foot shows up on everything boat-sized, not the engine line:

Per-foot and hourly items — published rates
ItemPublished rates
Shrink wrap$18.00–$26.50/ft by beam and hardtop (Somers Point, NJ, 2024–25); $26/ft (Lighthouse Harbor; Sportsman's); $20.45–$38.45/ft by length (Riverside, NJ); $23/ft standalone (Timber Marine)
Bottom wash$17/ft (Lighthouse Harbor); $8.25/ft (Somers Point)
Haul/launch à la carte$13/ft (Somers Point); $10/ft (Snug Harbor); often bundled into storage at other yards
Storage (boundary line — see the storage guide)outside $40–$45/ft (Somers Point); $34/ft through April 1 incl. haul, wash, launch (Maryland Boat Sales, 2026)

Professional shrink-wrap installation typically runs $12–$15 per foot; a first-time DIY heat-gun kit and material for a 20-footer runs $500–$600 and covers two or three installations (West Marine) — the kit amortizes if you keep wrapping.

Hourly billing appears on systems and odd jobs: Snug Harbor charges $125/hr plus materials for all-systems winterization; Somers Point's standard labor is $175/hour.

05Auditing your quote

A legitimate itemized quote names:

  • The winterization method — drain-only, or antifreeze fill/circulation. West Marine recommends antifreeze flushing for outboards; drain-only is common practice, but the quote should say which you're buying.
  • Antifreeze type and quantity — Riverside specifies -100°F; Bluff Creek specifies a drain-and-fill. Vague is a warning.
  • Whether the oil change is in or out — the biggest swing between a $175 and a $475 quote.
  • Fogging, fuel treatment, water and waste systems, haul/launch, wrap, storage — each as its own line or explicitly excluded.

Padding hides in vague flat lines — "winterize engine" with no method, no antifreeze spec, no oil mention. Also check the legit-but-disclosed fees: Somers Point prints a 2% shop/environmental fee, $15–$75 per work order, right on its sheet — that's what a disclosed fee looks like. And check whether tax is in: Bluff Creek's prices include taxes and shop fees; Somers Point adds 6.625% NJ sales tax on top. Pickup and delivery can be real money too — Bluff Creek charges $165/hr with a one-hour minimum.

06Which engine costs most to lay up, and why

Most expensive to least: full inboard > sterndrive > outboard.

  • Outboard — cheapest. There's no fixed raw-water plumbing in the boat; trimmed down, the engine drains itself. Verified pro range: roughly $170–$479, or $321.90 flat (Lighthouse Harbor).
  • Sterndrive — mid. Adds a drive leg with its own gear-oil service, plus an inboard raw-water circuit needing drain and antifreeze. Verified: $299–$999 (Sportsman's), $390–$509 (Timber Marine, Lighthouse Harbor), $407.39 (Bluff Creek).
  • Full inboard — most expensive. Raw-water circuits, heat exchangers — and then the boat's water, waste, A/C, generator and washdown systems each need antifreeze treatment. Riverside prices each water system separately: cold water $170, hot and cold $290, head $190, air conditioning $155, icemaker $115. A systems-laden boat accumulates lines fast.

07A note for Northern European readers

The Nordic bill is structured differently. Haul-out, wash and storage dominate; the engine lay-up is a smaller line, often bundled inside a bigger package. Published local points, kept in their own currencies:

Northern Europe — published lay-up and package prices
Yard / marketSeasonPublished lay-up or package price
Bakken Motor, Drammen (Norway, Mercury dealer)2026Outdoor winter package NOK 1,390/ft for 16–26 ft boats — incl. haul, hull and engine wash, antifouling coat, polishing, fresh-water frost protection, battery care. A package price, not a lay-up-only line. Outboard winter/service by HP: NOK 2,690–8,990 for 4-strokes, service materials extra
Mälaröarnas Båtvarv (Sweden)currentEngine winter preservation SEK 1,350 ex. materials; drive/gearcase winter check SEK 675–1,350
Venehallit (Finland)currentGlycol run €100, fresh-water engine flush €25, labor €90/h
Kuusiston Telakka (Finland)from 1.7.2024Maintenance work €78/h; yard field €22.50/m²; lift+launch €12/m²
BT-Satamapalvelut (Finland)published hinnastoLift/launch €120 (<9 m) / €170 (>9 m) incl. VAT; outdoor storage €20/m²
Gullbergs Marina (Sweden)currentStorage SEK 330–1,140/m² by type, Sept–Apr; lifting, wash, cradles, launch billed extra
Svendborg Havn (Denmark)currentWinter berth and land storage context — storage-dominated, see the storage guide
MarineLab (Poland)currentOutboard winter inspection, oils and filter included: 390 zł (1-cyl) to 2,799 zł (8-cyl), 2-strokes 30% cheaper
Marina Puck (Poland)currentLand storage 3–3.5 zł/m/day, crane 150 zł

The structural difference, stated plainly: in the US the marina line is "engine winterization" at a flat rate, with storage and wrap separate. In the Nordics, the line is the storage package — often in a heated hall — with engine preservation billed on top. Nordic storage rates dominate the total bill and get their own treatment in the storage guide.

08Levels, not quotes

Two things to hold onto as you compare your quote against the tables above. First, yards re-price annually — Somers Point's sheet says it in print: "Rates subject to change without notice." Second, Discover Boating calls getting a local estimate "the most accurate way" to price your boat, and it's right. Every number here is a level from a named yard's published list for a named season; your boat, your yard, and your scope will move it.

Storage rent, spring commissioning, and the question of when to winterize each have their own guide in this series.

FAQFAQ

How much does boat winterization cost?

DIY supplies for a typical single-engine boat run roughly $100–$250 (Discover Boating puts a bare-minimum basket at $50–$100; Boatsetter estimates about $250 for full-boat DIY). Professional engine winterization runs roughly $150–$600+ depending on type and tier — outboards from $175 (Timber Marine, WI, 2026–27) to $479 (Sportsman's, MO), sterndrive $407.39 per engine with taxes and shop fees (Bluff Creek, TX, 2025), $508.93 flat (Lighthouse Harbor, PA, Oct 2026 list) — with published tiers up to $675 (Timber Marine Platinum). Haul-out, shrink-wrap and storage are separate lines on top; winterization-plus-storage packages run $1,199–$2,599 (Sportsman's, MO).

How much is boat winterization per foot?

In the US, engine winterization itself is almost always flat-rated per engine, not per foot — Lighthouse Harbor (PA) states all its winterization prices are set at a flat rate, and no fetched US yard prices engine work by the foot. Per-foot billing appears on the boat-sized lines: shrink wrap $18–$26.50/ft (Somers Point, NJ, 2024–25) to $20.45–$38.45/ft (Riverside, NY), bottom wash $8.25–$17/ft, haul/launch around $10–$13/ft, and storage is also priced by the foot (see the storage guide).

What does a DIY boat winterization kit cost?

A bare-bones outboard basket — antifreeze, fuel stabilizer, fogging oil and gear lube — lands near $100, and adding the oil change, filter wrench and grease puts you in the low-to-mid $200s. West Marine catalog prices (accessed Oct 2026) include -50°F antifreeze at $9.99/gallon, STA-BIL 360° stabilizer at $31.99, gear lube at $15.99/quart, 4-stroke oil at $45.99/gallon and a Camco winterizing kit at $69.99. Discover Boating notes most components are reusable year to year, which is where much of the DIY savings comes from.

What do marinas charge for winterization packages, by engine type?

Published US rate sheets support a clear ranking — inboard/systems boats most expensive, sterndrive mid, outboard cheapest. Outboards: $175–$479 by HP and tier (Timber Marine, WI, 2026–27; Sportsman's, MO), $321.90 flat (Lighthouse Harbor, PA, Oct 2026 list). Sterndrive: $407.39 per engine including taxes and shop fees (Bluff Creek, TX, 2025), $299–$999 by cylinders and tier (Sportsman's, MO), $508.93 flat (Lighthouse Harbor). Inboard: $235 for a diesel sail auxiliary with antifreeze machine run included (Riverside, NY), or $125/engine for the drain-only line with systems billed at $125/hr (Snug Harbor, MI, 2026–27).

Is professional winterization worth it, or can I winterize my boat myself?

Mercury says the DIY-inclined 'can usually tackle the task' with basic tools, and West Marine calls outboard winterizing simple enough for most owners — on an outboard, DIY means the whole service line is your supply basket instead of a published rate. But the skip-risk on plumbed boats is four figures: BoatUS found more than three-quarters of ten years of GEICO|BoatUS freeze claims involved cracked engine blocks or exhaust manifolds from water left in the engine, and says its checklist would have prevented over 95% of those claims. Boatsetter puts even the smallest engine replacement over $10,000, so the sensible split is DIY the outboard and pay for sterndrive/inboard systems.

Does a winterization package include an oil change?

It varies by yard — and it's the single biggest swing factor between a ~$175 and a ~$475 outboard quote. Sportsman's (MO) charges 4-stroke outboards roughly double its 2-stroke price precisely because oil/filter/gear-lube changes are included, while Somers Point Marina (NJ, 2024–25) prices a basic 'fog & flush' at $170 per motor with the fluids change as a separate $170 line, warning that fog-and-flush alone isn't recommended for motors run over 10 hours since their last fluids change. Always ask whether oil is in the base price.

What should a legitimate winterization quote include, and what hidden fees should I watch for?

A legitimate itemized quote names the method (drain-only vs. antifreeze fill or circulation — Riverside, NY specifies -100°F antifreeze), the antifreeze quantity, whether the oil change is in or out, and separate lines for fogging, fuel treatment, water/waste systems, haul/launch, wrap and storage. Padding hides in a vague 'winterize engine' line with no method or oil mention — the same service name can mean very different scopes. Check the disclosed extras: Somers Point prints a 2% shop/environmental fee ($15–$75 per work order) plus 6.625% NJ sales tax on top of its rates, while Bluff Creek's (TX, 2025) prices already include taxes and shop fees; pickup/delivery can also cost extra — $165/hr with a one-hour minimum at Bluff Creek.

How much does boat winterization cost in Northern Europe?

The Nordic bill is structured differently: haul-out, wash and heated-hall storage dominate, and engine lay-up is a smaller, separate line. Published points include Bakken Motor in Drammen, Norway — an outdoor winter package of 1,390 kr/ft for 16–26 ft boats in 2026 (haul, washes, antifouling, polishing, frost protection and battery care included), with outboard winter/service from 2,690 to 8,990 kr for 4-strokes, materials extra; Mälaröarnas Båtvarv in Sweden at 1,350 kr for engine preservation ex. materials; Venehallit in Finland at 100 € for a glycol run plus 25 € for an engine flush; and MarineLab in Poland at 390–2,799 zł for outboard winter inspection with oils and filter included. Nordic storage rates dominate the total and are covered in the storage guide.
