How much does a boat cost?
The honest answer starts with published prices, not folklore. In 2025, US buyers bought 215,237 new powerboats (−8.8% YoY) and about 867,000 pre-owned units worth $10.8 billion — pre-owned is roughly 80% of all unit sales (NMMA, 2025 retail-exit data):
- A new, trailerable aluminum fishing boat, motor and trailer included: $17,995 (TRACKER Bass Tracker Classic XL, 2026 national price).
- A mainstream 22-foot pontoon: $37,995 new — and the sticker does not include the trailer (SUN TRACKER Party Barge 22 DLX w/90 hp, 2026).
- On the used side, a Boston Whaler 130 Super Sport runs $12,000–$40,000 asking, averaging $24,994 — right at the $23,906 a new one starts at (Boat Trader model page, retrieved via search index).
- The sticker is never the whole check: type, size, condition, and everything that gets added between the sticker and the out-the-door total — that's what this article breaks down.

01The price is a ladder, not a number
Type the question into a search engine and you'll get spans running from a few hundred dollars to eight figures. That span is technically true and completely useless. What's useful is the ladder of published, checkable prices — where the rungs actually sit in 2026.
02Entry: jon and aluminum fishing
| Class | Published price | What it includes | Source + date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bass Tracker Classic XL, aluminum bass boat | $17,995 | Boat + 40 hp Mercury + trailer ("Boat, Motor, & Trailer") | TRACKER, 2026 national price |
| Custom boat cover option | +$770 | — | TRACKER, 2026 |
| Trailer brakes option | +$450 | — | TRACKER, 2026 |
| Grizzly 14 jon boat trailer option | $1,295 | Single-axle trailer, freight excluded | TRACKER, 2026 |
| Jon-boat trailer, Road King RKG 14 (dealer stock) | $1,100 | New trailer alone | Ed's Marine Superstore, via search index, 2026-10-10 |
Two things worth noticing. First, the Classic XL is a complete package at under $18k — that's the honest entry floor for a new, motorized, towable boat. Second, the same package was $15,995 in a financing disclaimer dated February 2024 (TRACKER). That's a $2,000 rise on the cheapest rung in under three years: new-boat price creep is real even at the bottom.
The Grizzly 14 jon's own package price is JavaScript-loaded on TRACKER's site and not server-rendered, so we won't quote it; the brand's published Classic XL price anchors this class.
03Pontoons: three honest floors
Sources disagree on where a "small pontoon" starts, and we won't average them away:
- J.D. Power guide: "the average new pontoon boat costs between $15,000 and $80,000 at retail"; a small powered pontoon "around $15,000"; a two-person boat "can even cost less than $10,000, but these are tiny vessels" (J.D. Power pontoon guide, 2026).
- Boat Trader: "Generally new pontoon boats can start at around $25,000 for small models" (retrieved via search index).
- Barletta (manufacturer): the industry spans "$20,000 to upwards of $300,000" (Barletta, 2026).
So the real spread is roughly $15k guide floor / $20k manufacturer floor / $25k market floor for a genuinely small new pontoon. All three are published; they just measure different things.
The new-model ladder, published:
| Model | Published price | Notes | Source + date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun Tracker Party Barge 16 DLX | $29,810 | 2027 MY ask, Odessa TX | retrieved via search index |
| Sun Tracker Party Barge 22 DLX, 90 hp | $37,995 | National price; "Price Excludes Optional Trailer" | SUN TRACKER, 2026 |
| Sun Tracker Party Barge 22 RF DLX | $39,995 | National price, same $5,200 trailer option | SUN TRACKER, 2026 |
| Bennington S-ONE | $34,326 MSRP / $25,442 NAP | Same page, two prices — see below | Bennington MY2027 MSRP |
| Bennington M Line | $71,140 | MSRP | Bennington MY2027 MSRP |
| Bennington LX Sport | $91,217 | MSRP | Bennington MY2027 MSRP |
| Bennington R / Q Line | $148,304 | MSRP | Bennington MY2027 MSRP |
| Bennington QX Line | $188,136 | MSRP | Bennington MY2027 MSRP |
One warning about mixing MSRP and advertised price: Bennington's own page lists the S-ONE at $34,326 US MSRP but $25,442 US NAP, a ~26% gap on a single page (Bennington MY2027 MSRP). Always check which price you're reading.
Engine choice alone moves the same pontoon hull: the Party Barge 22 DLX runs from $31,110 (9.9 hp ProKicker) to $41,840 (150 L) — a spread of $10,730 on the identical boat (SUN TRACKER, 2026; spread is our computation). Used pontoon asks on Boat Trader span $8,819–$227,670 (retrieved via search index).
04Fiberglass runabouts and center consoles
| Model | Published price | Source + date |

| Boston Whaler 130 Super Sport | $23,906 starting | Boston Whaler configurator, via search index, accessed 2026-10-10 |
| Bayliner V22 runabout (22'5", 225 hp max) | $56,094 starting | Boating Magazine preview, via search index, 2026 |
| Stingray 211DC bowrider (200 hp upgraded engine) | $72,990 ask, new 2026 | Blue Marlin Boats, retrieved 2026-10-10 |
| TideWater 232 LXF center console | $114,990 ask, new 2026 | Blue Marlin Boats |
| TideWater 272 LXF | $209,990 ask, new 2027 | Blue Marlin Boats |
| Jeanneau NC 895 Series 2 express cruiser | $299,990 ask, new 2025 | Blue Marlin Boats |
The Whaler configurator itself warns: "PRICE REFLECTS OPTIONS SELECTED. CONTACT YOUR DEALER FOR FINAL PRICING, SPECIFIC DEALER FEES, GOVERNMENT FEES, AND TAXES."
05Sail
A new Beneteau First 30, a name going back to 1977 with nearly 3,000 built, starts at US$171,440 excluding taxes (Beneteau, 2026; page via search index). Excluding taxes is the European builder convention, not a trick: VAT is added per country of purchase.
06The honest holes
Some classes simply have no public builder pricing in this research, and we'd rather say so than invent:
- Catalina (sail): specs only, no MSRP published.
- Ski/watersports boats (Malibu, Nautique, MasterCraft): no price extract captured. The Stingray and Bayliner are the only bowrider-class anchors here.
- Houseboats: no builder MSRP exists — only aggregates, and they disagree. Boat Trader's editorial puts the average between $250,000 and $750,000; boats.com's aggregate average ask is $141,434 (range $6,500–$1,999,000). Live asks run from $5,000 for used hulls to $1.5M+ (Boat Trader editorial + listings, retrieved 2026-10-10). Treat these as the spread they are: two different sources, two different definitions of "average." Houseboat inventory is also regional: the captured asks sit in Utah (Halls Crossing, on Lake Powell) and Texas (Canyon Lake).
- PWCs, inflatables, kayaks: no published pricing in this research at all. The low end of the market here rests on jon/aluminum packages and used small boats, not on a "$500 new inflatable"; no source we captured supports that figure.
- The yacht gap: between the Jeanneau NC 895 ($299,990) and the 2025 Galeon 360 Fly broker ask ($633,078, condition as displayed), the captured sources are empty. Above that: Galeon broker asks of $1.7M–$2.7M in as-displayed currencies (YachtWorld Europe, retrieved 2026-10-10). Galeon publishes no price list — these are broker asks, year and condition as displayed.
07The used market is the real market
New boats get the catalogs; used boats get the buyers. Pre-owned accounted for roughly 80% of all unit sales in 2025: 867,059 units worth $10.8 billion (NMMA, 2025). Do the arithmetic and that's an average transaction of roughly $12,455 — our computation on NMMA's published figures, not a number NMMA prints.
08How the 2025 market actually behaved
| Indicator | Figure | Source + date |
|---|---|---|
| New powerboat retail units, 2025 | 215,237 (−8.8% YoY) | NMMA, 2025 |
| Pre-owned units, 2025 | 867,059 / $10.8B | NMMA, 2025 |
| Average days on market — new | 279 (+50 vs 2024) | Boats Group/Denison, 2025 |
| Average days on market — used | 139 (+16 vs 2024) | Boats Group/Denison, 2025 |
| Average NA price trend | +4.90% | Boats Group/Denison, 2025 |
| 2-year-old boat sales | +6.72% YoY | Boats Group/Denison, 2025 |
| 1-year-old boat sales | −29.16% YoY (largest unit decline) | Boats Group/Denison, 2025 |
| 46–55 ft segment | −5%, avg ~$511,000 — the negotiation-leverage zone | Boats Group/Denison, 2025 |
| NMMA 2026 outlook | Unit sales "on par to slightly up," market "in a relatively balanced position" | NMMA, 2026 |
The shape that matters: boats between 2 and 5 years old are the sweet spot (Boats Group/Denison, 2025). One-year-old boats took the steepest unit decline; buyers refuse to eat the first-year depreciation hit.
09The depreciation question — two sourced claims
We found two sourced angles on first-year depreciation and we're showing both, attributed:
- The Boats Group market index (reported by Denison Yacht Sales) shows what buyers do about it: sales of 1-year-old boats fell −29.16% year over year in 2025, the largest unit decline of any age bracket, while 2-year-old sales grew +6.72% (Boats Group/Denison, 2025). Buyers are voting against the first-year hit.
- The J.D. Power pontoon guide quantifies the hit itself: pontoons "depreciate by as much as 25 to 35 percent in the first year" — "a $40,000 boat for a reasonable $26,000 to $30,000 price range" as a prior-year model.
The index shows the behavior; the guide quantifies the loss. Put together: roughly a quarter to a third gone in year one.
A same-dealer new-vs-used snapshot (Blue Marlin Boats, NY, retrieved 2026-10-10; all asking):
| Pair | New | Used | Used as % of new (our computation) |
|---|---|---|---|
| TideWater 232 LXF (2026) vs 210 LXF (2019) | $114,990 | $44,990 | ~39%, at 7 years old |
| Stingray 211DC (2026) vs 214LR (2021/22) | $72,990 | $44,990–$54,990 | ~62–75% |
| Jeanneau NC 895 new vs Leader 9.0 WA, 2025, 40 hrs | $299,990 | $279,990 | a class-level comparison: ~$20k between new and a lightly used sister-class boat |
10The lesson of the used Whaler
Here's the fact that should recalibrate every reader: the Boston Whaler 130 Super Sport starts new at $23,906 (Boston Whaler configurator, via search index, accessed 2026-10-10), but the model's used listings average $24,994 asking (Boat Trader model page, retrieved via search index). The used average sits above the new starting price, because the used pool mixes nearly-new units with the $12,000 fixer-uppers. A used spread is not automatically a discount. Check the new price before assuming the used market is cheaper.
And one discipline note we will not abandon: every used figure in this article is an asking price. No sold-price database exists in this research — the Boats Group index is the only transaction-trend source, and even it reports trends, not your neighbor's actual check. Asks are where negotiations start, not where they end.
11Out the door: the sticker is not the check you write
12Sales tax
| State | Rate | Cap / note | Source + date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Florida | 6% | Total tax capped at $18,000 incl. surtax — any boat $300,000+ pays the same ceiling | Florida DOR, GT-800006 (cap); rate per broker summary |
| Virginia | 2% | $2,000 cap | broker summary, retrieved 2026-10-10 |
| North Carolina | 3% | $1,500 cap | broker summary |
| New Jersey | 3.5% | $20,000 cap | broker summary |
| Maryland | 5% | $15,900 cap (as of July 1, 2024) | broker summary |
| South Carolina | 5% | $500 cap; possible property-tax exposure | broker summary |
| New York | est. ~8.25% | On first $230,000; local rate varies — estimated | broker summary |
Florida's cap is the headline: on a $500,000 boat, you pay the same $18,000 maximum as on a $300,000 boat. Verify your own state; these are broker-published summaries except Florida's.
13Survey (used boats)
| Item | Figure | Source + date |
|---|---|---|
| Hull survey, per foot | $18–$25/ft (J.D. Power says $18–25; Discover Boating says $20–25 — shown as the spread) | J.D. Power, 2026; Discover Boating/NMMA |
| Named New England surveyor | $25/ft; damage survey $175/hr | Atlantic Marine Survey rate sheet |
| Small-boat inspection floor | "from $100 up to 29 ft" | Atlantic Marine Survey rate sheet |
| Engine survey | ~$500/engine | BoatUS, Jan 2026 |
| Rigging survey | $400–$600 | BoatUS, Jan 2026 |
| Full multi-survey day (3 surveys + haulout) | "may be a $3,000 day" | BoatUS, Jan 2026 |
Surveyors can work simultaneously, so the process fits in a day. And a surveyor's repair budget is indicative, not exact: treat it as a negotiation input, not an invoice.
14Trailer — if it's not on the sticker
Read the sticker line, because inclusion varies within one manufacturer group: TRACKER's $17,995 Classic XL includes the trailer ("Boat, Motor, & Trailer"), while sister brand SUN TRACKER's pontoon explicitly says "Price Excludes Optional Trailer." Both are White River Marine Group.
| Trailer | Published price | Source + date |
|---|---|---|
| 14-ft jon trailer, single axle (dealer stock) | $1,100 | Ed's Marine Superstore, via search index, 2026 |
| 14-ft jon trailer, single axle (OEM) | $1,295, freight excluded | TRACKER, 2026 |
| Pontoon tandem w/ brakes (OEM) | $5,200, freight excluded | SUN TRACKER, 2026 |
| Pontoon trailers, general band | $5,000–$10,000+; saltwater spec costs more | Barletta, 2026 |
Options bite too: a $790 underpinning kit and a $1,080 mooring cover are published options on the budget pontoon (SUN TRACKER, 2026).
15Width, towing, and transport
The federal commercial width standard is 102 inches (8'6"); beyond that, overwidth permits come into play, though recreational tow rigs are generally not commercial vehicles under federal rules, so state permit rules govern private towing (FHWA). If you're buying far away and having it hauled, published 2026 hauler-guide rates run $1.50–$2.25/mile long-haul for standard-width boats, rising to $3.75–$5.00/mile at an 11–12 ft beam; totals run from $300–$1,500 for small boats to $2,500–$6,500 for 29–35 ft cruisers and $4,500–$15,000+ above 36 ft, with oversize permits and escorts adding $500–$2,500+ (Rapid Auto Shipping 2026 guide; industry-published rates, not a regulated tariff). For context, the US average boat-transport cost rose 48% between 2020 and 2022, from $1,270 to $1,883 (uShip data via the hauler guide).
Ask one question before you buy at a distance: is the price FOB the factory or at your dock? Bennington's prices explicitly exclude the destination fee; TRACKER's prep-and-freight price is dealer-specific. Which leads to the honest line: prep and freight fees have no published dollar figure in this research. Manufacturers and dealers quote them individually; get the number in writing before you sign. The same goes for documentation fees: no source we captured prices them, so we won't invent a range.
16Three worked examples
All built from published figures only. Arithmetic flagged as computation.
Example 1 — the $18k aluminum package, Florida, out the door. TRACKER Classic XL: $17,995 (boat + motor + trailer, 2026 national price). Florida sales tax: 6% would be $1,079.70, well under the $18,000 cap (Florida DOR), so the full rate applies. Total ≈ $19,075 before dealer prep/freight (computation; prep/freight quoted per dealer, no published figure). No separate trailer purchase needed, and no survey on a new boat in this example.
Example 2 — the Whaler 130 Super Sport, new vs used. New: $23,906 starting (Boston Whaler configurator, via search index). Used: the model's spread runs $12,000–$40,000 asking, average $24,994 (Boat Trader, retrieved via search index), the same price as new. The $12,000 end of the spread is the fixer-upper end; a 2025 example asks $24,995. Add a survey on any used purchase: hull surveys run $18–$25/ft, but on a small boat the Atlantic Marine Survey small-boat floor — "from $100.00 up to 29 ft" — is the realistic figure. The lesson: on this model, the used market offers no automatic discount — only condition choices.
Example 3 — the 22-ft pontoon, complete. Sun Tracker Party Barge 22 DLX with 90 hp: $37,995, trailer excluded (SUN TRACKER, 2026). Add the published tandem trailer with brakes: $5,200, freight excluded (SUN TRACKER, 2026). Boat + trailer = $43,195 (computation), before freight, prep, tax, and the cover/underpinning options you'll likely want ($1,080 + $790 published).
17The Poland / EU block
- Boats and prices in this section are exactly as published — EUR netto or PLN, without conversion.*
18The netto convention
European builders quote ex VAT ("excl. VAT & transport"). Northman, a Polish builder of trawler-style yachts, publishes its ladder only via its Dutch dealer Natural Yachts (northman.pl itself shows specs only, no prices):
| Model | Price as published | Source + date |
|---|---|---|
| Nexus Revo 870 cabrio Electric | od € 107.145 netto | Natural Yachts (the Dutch dealer), 2026-10-10, excl. VAT & transport |
| Nexus Revo 870 Electric (full) | od € 111.000 netto | same |
| Northman 1050 Trawler Diesel | € 196.900 | same |
| Northman 1050 Trawler Electric | € 248.875 | same |
| Northman 1200 Electric | € 305.000 | same |
| Northman 1300 Diesel / Electric | € 265.900 / € 330.550 | same |
| Maxus 26 (sailing) | € 53.400 | same |
The electric premium over the same diesel hull is +€51,975 (1050) and +€64,650 (1300) — computation on the builder's published pairs.
Polish dealer Power Boats Poland quotes netto across the board (retrieved 2026-10-10): Sea Ray from € 35 000 netto (used) up to € 590 000 netto (370 Sundancer demo); new Sea Ray 190 SPX 2026 at 68 400–72 690 EUR netto; Delphia 11 Flylounge 2026 at 329 000 EUR netto; Beneteau Oceanis 34.1 (10,77 m) at 159 000 EUR netto; Sea Ray 320 Sundancer Coupe (10,0 m) at 429 000 EUR netto.
19What the state adds
- VAT 23% on top of netto: the basic Polish rate (biznes.gov.pl); for yachts specifically, purchase "przy zastosowaniu stawki podstawowej (23%)", and exemption only "w wyjątkowych okolicznościach" (lawyer-authored tax series via jachty.com). When importing, VAT is paid once, at the first EU clearance country's rate, e.g. "21% – stawka holenderska, odprawa w Holandii." Intra-EU purchase of a boat as a new means of transport is reported on VAT-23, with a 14-day payment deadline (jachty.com tax series; form per gov.pl listings).
- PCC 2% on boats bought from a private person.
- No excise duty (akcyza) on boats — verified against the official excise catalogue (podatki.gov.pl), which lists alcohol, fuels, tobacco, energy, coal, and passenger cars; vessels are absent (verdict via jachty.com's lawyer-authored series).
- Registration: 80 zł for the application and registration document, plus 15 zł for a register extract, 17 zł for a power-of-attorney filing, and 5 zł per started page for certified copies; 30-day term (warszawa19115.pl). Mandatory at sea and for charter; voluntary inland.
- Trailers: published PLN ladder from 4 500 zł (small) through 13 000 zł (6 m, DMC 1500), 15 000–17 500 zł (DMC 2000–2500), up to 25 000–29 760 zł (DMC 3500), brutto (naprzyczepie.pl shop listings). Category B caps the whole rig at 3.5 t.
- Transport: "od 3 PLN za 1 km" round-trip per specialist hauler transport-jachtow.pl's cennik, plus 50 zł for trailer/slip/fueling; platform guides show 0.8–1.2 zł/km (Clicktrans, 2020, dated) and 1.5–3 zł/km bands (Kliper/GlobKurier); larger yachts "od 1,8–3 zł/km" (Clicktrans). Budget realistically per route.
20Used market in PLN — asks, not transactions
SailCraft's 2026 ladder (published 2026-10-04): used small cabin boats 20–50 tys. zł (seaworthy hulls from about 15–25 tys. zł); 50–150 tys. zł for larger cabin boats, inland and sea-going (Cobra 850, Antila 27, Delphia 28 named); 150–400 tys. zł and 400 tys. zł+ above. Decathlon's editorial floors: used 5–7 m at 20–40 tys. zł, motorówki 30–60 tys. zł (labeled as editorial). Live asks back this up: Antila 26cc at 160 000 zł, Bavaria 34 (1988) at 192 000 zł, Phobos 34 at 463 000 zł brutto, Galeon 290 FLY (2007) at 628 000 zł (Motogratka, retrieved 2026-10-10).
One contradiction we show rather than hide: Decathlon's editorial floors say a new 10 m motor yacht "kosztuje od 450 tys. zł" and a new sea-going sailing yacht "od 300 tysięcy złotych" — while actual dealer netto asks for that class run € 429 000 netto (Sea Ray 320 Sundancer, 10,0 m) and € 196 900 netto (Northman 1050, 9,8 m). Those are different currencies and different leagues: the editorial floors are PLN guesswork, the dealer ladders are EUR netto asking prices for real inventory. Don't quote one next to the other without that caveat.
And the market-structure fact that explains all the netto pricing: Poland builds roughly 25,000 boats and yachts a year and exports about 95% of them (PAIH; a secondary trade source says 20–22 tys. and 1,5 mld zł obrotów; variance noted). The industry is Europe's leader in 6–12 m outboard motor yachts. Builders price in EUR netto because their customers are abroad; the Polish domestic buyer sees netto catalogs and adds VAT.
All PLN used figures above are ceny ofertowe, nie transakcyjne — asking prices, not closed deals. No Polish sold-price database exists in this research.
21What this article does not do
- Annual ownership costs (insurance, dock/slip, winterization, maintenance) live in our dedicated guide: cost of owning a boat. This article ends where the bill of sale ends.
- Paperwork and transfer (titles, bills of sale, registration transfer) are covered in boat ownership transfer.
- Valuation tools (J.D. Power's successor to NADA Guides) are a calculator market; we cite them as tools, not as book values, and don't reproduce gated numbers.
- PWCs, kayaks, inflatables: no published pricing in this research. We say so rather than improvise; the low end of this market, honestly stated, starts at the aluminum packages and used small boats above.
FAQ
How much does a boat cost?
The honest entry floor for a new, complete, trailerable package is $17,995 (TRACKER Bass Tracker Classic XL, boat + motor + trailer, 2026 national price). A mainstream 22-foot pontoon starts at $37,995 excluding the trailer (SUN TRACKER Party Barge 22 DLX w/90 hp, 2026). On the used side, a Boston Whaler 130 Super Sport spans $12,000-$40,000 asking, averaging $24,994 (Boat Trader listing average, retrieved via search index). Type, size, condition, and everything added between sticker and out-the-door total move the number.
How much does a pontoon boat cost?
Published floors for a genuinely small new pontoon differ by source: about $15,000 per the J.D. Power guide, $20,000 per manufacturer Barletta, and $25,000 per Boat Trader (J.D. Power; Barletta, 2026; Boat Trader listing average, retrieved via search index). A mainstream 22-foot Sun Tracker Party Barge 22 DLX with 90 hp is $37,995, trailer excluded (SUN TRACKER, 2026). Bennington's ladder runs from $34,326 MSRP (S-ONE) to $188,136 (QX Line) (Bennington MY2027 MSRP). Used pontoon asks on Boat Trader span $8,819-$227,670 (Boat Trader listing average, retrieved via search index).
How much does a fishing boat cost?
A new aluminum fishing package with motor and trailer is $17,995 for the TRACKER Bass Tracker Classic XL (TRACKER, 2026 MSRP), up from $15,995 in a February 2024 financing disclaimer (TRACKER, 2026). If the sticker excludes the trailer, a 14-ft jon trailer runs $1,100-$1,295 at published prices (Ed's Marine Superstore; TRACKER, 2026). Engine choice also moves the same hull, as the Sun Tracker Party Barge 22 DLX spans $31,110-$41,840 depending on motor (SUN TRACKER, 2026).
What are the hidden costs of buying a boat?
The sticker excludes sales tax, prep and freight, survey on used boats, and sometimes the trailer. Florida's state rate is 6% with total tax capped at $18,000 (Florida DOR). Hull surveys run $18-$25 per foot, with a small-boat inspection floor of $100 up to 29 ft (J.D. Power; Discover Boating; Atlantic Marine Survey rate sheet). Trailers add $1,100-$5,200 at published OEM prices, and prep/freight fees have no published dollar figure, so get them in writing from the dealer (TRACKER, 2026; SUN TRACKER, 2026).
Is a used boat cheaper than a new one?
Not automatically. The Boston Whaler 130 Super Sport starts new at $23,906 (Boston Whaler configurator, accessed 2026-10-10), yet the model's used listings average $24,994 asking (Boat Trader listing average, retrieved via search index), because the used pool mixes fixer-uppers with nearly-new units. Pre-owned is still roughly 80% of all unit sales, with 867,059 used units sold in 2025 (NMMA, 2025). The market's sweet spot is boats 2-5 years old, and used boats sold in an average 139 days vs 279 for new (Boats Group/Denison, 2025).
How much does the first year of depreciation cost on a boat?
Two sourced views: the J.D. Power pontoon guide says pontoons depreciate by as much as 25 to 35 percent in the first year, turning a $40,000 boat into a $26,000-$30,000 prior-year purchase (J.D. Power). Buyer behavior backs this up: sales of 1-year-old boats fell 29.16% year over year in 2025, the largest unit decline of any age bracket, while 2-year-old sales grew 6.72% (Boats Group/Denison, 2025). Note the 29.16% is a unit-sales decline, not a depreciation rate. Together the data explain why most buyers shop the 2-to-5-year-old sweet spot.

What does a first boat realistically cost to get on the water?
A realistic all-in floor is around $19,075 out the door in Florida: the $17,995 TRACKER Classic XL package plus 6% sales tax of $1,079.70, well under the $18,000 state cap (TRACKER, 2026 MSRP; Florida DOR). That figure excludes dealer prep and freight, which have no published dollar figure and are quoted per dealer. On the used side, the pre-owned average transaction works out to roughly $12,455 on NMMA's published figures, our computation (NMMA, 2025). Annual ownership costs such as insurance, dockage, and winterization are a separate bill covered in our cost-of-owning-a-boat guide.
